Have you ever noticed that some of the happiest, most fulfilled people you know are the ones who serve others? There’s a reason for that—it’s the way God designed us. We were never meant to sit on the sidelines and just watch ministry happen. We were made to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to use what God has given us to make a difference in the lives of others.

Serving isn’t just something “good Christians” do. It’s the heartbeat of what it means to follow Jesus. In Mark 10:45, Jesus says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” If the Savior of the world didn’t consider Himself too important to serve others, then we’ve got our example right there! Jesus didn’t lead with status—He led with a towel, washing feet, loving people, and showing us that true greatness starts with humility and action.

When we serve, something incredible happens, we start to look more like Jesus. Every time you greet someone at the door, lead a small group, run tech, or prepare coffee, you’re participating in God’s plan to reach people. You’re not just “helping out”—you’re shaping faith, planting seeds of hope, and showing others what the love of Christ looks like in real life.

The Bible is clear: serving is not optional; it’s essential. In 1 Peter 4:10, we’re reminded, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.” Notice that? Every single one of us has something to give. You might not be a preacher or a singer, but maybe you’ve got a welcoming smile, a listening ear, a love for children, or a heart for making people feel seen. God can and will use that!

Paul also reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12 that the Church is like a body—many different parts, all working together. We need all kinds of people: the encouragers, the organizers, the tech-savvy, the big-hearted mentors, the goofy game leaders, and the prayer warriors. Each role matters. Each person matters. Because when the body works together, the whole Church moves forward in strength and unity.

OK, so here is my pitch for serving in student ministry. Why?, because student ministry is the best. I might be a little biased though, ha. You might be thinking, “Why student ministry? Teenagers are wild!” And yes, sometimes they are—but that’s what makes it amazing. Middle and high school are some of the most formational years of a person’s life. Students are asking big questions about faith, identity, and purpose. They’re trying to figure out who they are and where they belong. And guess what? You could be the person who helps them find those answers in Jesus.

Think about it: what if your simple “Hey, glad you’re here!” is the thing that makes a student feel like they belong for the first time? What if your small group conversation helps a student discover that God really loves them, even when life feels messy? What if your act of service sparks a lifelong faith? That’s not just volunteering—that’s ministry.

Serving in student ministry isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up, being real, and helping students discover their identity as a child of the King. It’s about creating a space where students feel accepted, valued, and challenged to grow. It’s messy, it’s fun, and it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.

So, what next? If you’ve been waiting for a sign to get involved—this, is it! Student ministry needs people just like you. You don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t need a theology degree. You just need a heart that says, “God, I’m willing.”

There’s a place for you—whether that’s leading a group, parent partnership, helping with events, or simply being a consistent, caring adult in a student’s life. Every role matters, and every week is another opportunity to live the full life God has for you and these students.

So, take the step. Join the team. Be part of what God is doing in the next generation. Because when you say yes to serving, you’re not just helping out—you’re helping change lives forever.

Ready to jump in? Reach out to me, and let’s make a difference together in the church cough cough, student ministry. You’ll be amazed at how God uses you—and how much joy you’ll find when you serve.
