The month of May stirs a complex mix of emotions in me—both joy and frustration. It’s a month filled with beauty—flowers in full bloom, warmer temperatures, and longer days filled with sunshine. It’s also a time of transition, as school wraps up and sports seasons end. These changes can bring joy and anticipation. Yet, alongside these blessings comes a whirlwind of activity: end-of-year events, celebrations, lots of to do’s and graduations. The pace can feel relentless, leaving many of us overwhelmed, weary, and gasping for breath.

Our souls weren’t designed to operate in a state of perpetual busyness. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.” This invitation to stillness stands in stark contrast to the frenzied pace of modern life. Stillness is not merely the absence of activity; it’s an intentional pause that allows us to hear the voice of God. When we slow down, create margin, and re-tether our hearts to Him, we find the renewal and peace our spirits crave. In this stillness, we are reminded of who God is and who we are in Him—a truth that brings perspective to our lives.

With a daughter graduating and a son preparing for high school, I feel the weight of May’s busyness. It’s easy to get swept up in the chaos of responsibilities, but I’ve learned the importance of intentionally stepping away. One way I’ve done this is through a practice of taking an entire "day away with God." This is a time set aside to do whatever helps me connect deeply with the heart of God. Sometimes I hike, listen to worship music or just sit in the beauty of creation. My day often includes reading Scripture, journaling, and simply sitting in silence. And it always includes a great cup (or two) of coffee. These moments of solitude create space for God to refresh our souls and restore our perspective.

Slowing down is not just about finding rest; it’s about tuning our hearts to God’s voice despite the noise. When we pause and listen, we create room for God to speak truth into our lives. It’s in these moments of quiet that we can discern His will, feel His love, and draw strength from His presence. This is a necessity for a life anchored in faith.

Perhaps you’re in one of those seasons where the demands of life leave you running on fumes. You might find yourself barely existing, checking off tasks without truly engaging with God. If that’s you, I encourage you to carve out time for rest and reflection. Whether it’s an hour, a day, or an entire weekend, this intentional reset can help you focus on what truly matters. When we prioritize time with God, we gain clarity, peace, and the capacity to love others as He intended.

For those who find themselves in a slower, more predictable rhythm of life, the challenge is different. A comfortable routine can lead to complacency, where the predictability of our days dulls our spiritual sensitivity. Are we missing opportunities to re-tether our hearts to God simply because we’ve settled into a pattern that requires little effort? Even in seasons of rest, we must remain vigilant to ensure our hearts are aligned with His.

The truth is, no matter the season of life we’re in, our relationship with God requires intentionality. Busyness and complacency are both barriers that can keep us from experiencing the fullness of His presence. Creating margin in our lives—whether that means saying no to certain commitments or stepping out of our comfort zones—is critical for our spiritual formation.

So how can we practically slow down and create this margin? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Start your day with stillness. Spend the first few minutes of your morning in prayer or reading Scripture. Let God’s Word anchor your day.

  2. Take a technology break. Set aside specific times to disconnect from your phone, social media, and email. Use this space to be present with God and loved ones.

  3. Schedule solitude. Whether it’s a walk in the park or a quiet hour at home, plan time for reflection and prayer.

  4. Practice gratitude. Keep a journal of things you’re thankful for. Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s overwhelming us to the blessings God has given.

  5. Evaluate your commitments. Prayerfully consider where you’re investing your time. Are these activities drawing you closer to God, or are they distractions?

As we navigate the rhythms of May and beyond, let’s resist the pull of busyness and complacency. Instead, let’s embrace the stillness that allows us to know God more deeply. When we do, we not only experience His peace but also gain the strength to love and serve others in meaningful ways. Let this be the month we choose to slow down, create margin, and re-tether our hearts to the One who refreshes our souls.
